This course will consist of four periods per week of mixed learning in and out of the classroom. Outdoor Education will give you experiences, knowledge and skills to enhance your enjoyment of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique taiao/ outdoor environments.
The course will cover:
Adventure-based learning and team-building games to develop whakapono/trust, kotahitanga/team-work, whakaoti-rapanga/ problem solving and whanaungatanga/interpersonal skills
Understanding and exploring Aotearoa New Zealand’s taiao/ unique outdoor environments and discovering taonga species, including a field-trip to PÅ«taringamotu/Riccarton bush
Kaitiakitanga and conservation activities including pest management, protecting biodiversity, environmental restoration and tree planting
Introduction to haumaru/risk management and trip planning, including identifying, understanding and managing weather, hypothermia, hazards, decision-making and group management
Camping skills including cooking in the outdoors, setting up shelters, clothing and equipment for the outdoor environment
A range of introductory outdoor experiences such as rock climbing, bouldering and abseiling, mountain biking, caving experience at Cave Stream, day hiking, ropes course activities and
A three-day camp at the Papanui Campsite in the Craigieburn Forest Park
