Course Description

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills to run a small business. Students will work in groups to run their own small business throughout the year and compete in the Young Enterprise Scheme, a nationwide competition.

In this course students will
1. Get into small groups and set up their own business
2. Come up with an idea for a product that is environmentally sustainable
3. Conduct market research to find out if their product idea will sell
4. Use their own money to buy all the raw materials needed to make a product
5. Sell a product to the market and keep any profit

Assessment
As well as gained credits towards NCEA Level 3 successful students can also gain the Young Enterprise Certificate.
If a student achieves 14 Level 3 credits in this course it will be counted as an approved subject for University Entrance.

Future Possibilities
This is a good background to pursue tertiary study in Business and the knowledge to set up and run a small business successfully.


Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

$35.00 registration fee for the Young Enterprise and a possible investment into your business. If your business turns a profit at the end of the year, the money is split between the business shareholders.

Recommended Prior Learning

A background in Accounting and Economics is good preparation for this course. Maturity and the ability to be a part of a team are essential.
