Course Description

Music
Music explores some of the fundamental musical skills including: Practical skills on guitar and keyboard, theoretical and contextual knowledge, aural skills and musical notation.
Students have the opportunity to:
- work at their own level in individualised and highly practical programmes
- develop their performance abilities through playing and singing, both individually and in groups
- learn guitar and keyboard skills while gaining knowledge in basic theory and listening
- explore their creative potential through composition either as an individual or in a band
- use and explore music technology, particularly computers and keyboards and the beginnings of sound recording
Visual Art
This course offers students a chance to develop their understanding of different art making processes. In the Art Department students grow their skills through using a variety of art materials, techniques and ideas. Students have access to a wide range of resources and are encouraged to discover their interests in new areas, including:
- Art Design
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Photography
- Printmaking
- Art History

Recommended Prior Learning
All Year 9 students study a least two of the four “Arts” disciplines offered at Papanui High School. The disciplines are:
- Dance
- Drama
- Music
- Visual Art
