Course Description

In Tikanga a-iwi (Social Studies), ākonga will learn about people, places, cultures, histories and the economic world within and beyond New Zealand through the theme of work “Conflict - Home and Away”.
Social Studies helps us understand people by exploring different points of view, values and beliefs. Opportunities are given to develop communication, critical thinking and social decision-making skills. These skills help us become responsible and informed individuals with the ability to understand the world that we live in.
Topics include:
Aotearoa New Zealand Histories including the Māori Battalion and Dawn Raids
Human Rights
Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Sustainability of Antarctica
Children of the Holocaust
Displaced People
Recommended Prior Learning
In Year 10 Social Studies is a core subject, for four periods per week for the full year.
