Course Description

Teacher in Charge:

The Fitness course is ideal for the student who is interested in sports and see themselves being involved in sports/physical activity in the long term. This course will give students who aspire to work or be involved in a fitness, sporting or coaching career opportunities to gain a solid foundation of knowledge relating to the body, exercises and managing injuries. 

Specifically,  students will learn about human anatomy as it relates to movement, exercise techniques and sports injuries. 

There is also a fitness component where students will participate in weekly physical activity. 


Assessment
A total of 17 credits at NCEA level 3 that are internally assessed unit standards.


Future Possibilities: Students who complete this course can move into tertiary study at New Zealand Institute of Sport or Ara Institute of Canterbury and careers within the sport, recreation and fitness industry. These could include but are not limited to fitness instruction, personal trainer, gym instruction, after school and holiday programs, coaching and Armed Services.


Recommended Prior Learning

• Reasonable attainment of Level 2 NCEA credits is recommended.
• Level 2 Physical Education, SPL22S and SPO22S are an advantage but not essential.
• Performance in SPL22S and SPO22S will be taken into consideration for enrolling in FIT32S.
• Commitment to the demands of this course inside and outside of school hours.

Pathway

Students who complete this course can move into tertiary study at New Zealand Institute of Sport or Ara Institute of Canterbury and careers within the sport, recreation and fitness industry. These could include but are not limited to fitness instruction, personal trainer, gym instruction, after school and holiday programs, coaching and Armed Services.

Assessment Information

Assessment opportunities will be in form of formal written tasks and practical demonstrations. The practical demonstrations will be both observed in person by the teacher as as well submitted by video.
