Course Description

This course will consist of 4 theory periods per week where students will use critical thinking to look at major social issues that are in society today. Topics covered include:

  • Social media - looking at the benefits and disadvantages of social media, how companies use it to hook people in and the impact of social media on individuals, others and society - how do you know the information you are seeing is correct?

  • Body Image - studying what determines what makes someone beautiful, has this always been this way or has beauty changed throughout the ages, how has social media influenced our views on body image, what is body dysmorphia and how can we address some of the issues we are given.

  • Gender issues - looking at gender differences in other cultures including child marriage and violence against women, seeing if there is a gender bias in education and in the workplace, looking at the traditional stereotype of masculinity and femininity and has that changed and also looking at transgender athletes in sport and the problems they are facing around competing.

  • Drug laws and the impact of decriminalisation on society - studying the cost of drugs on society and should New Zealand decriminalise the use of all drugs, looking at the impact of drugs in sport and the recent rise of vaping
