Year 10 Te Reo Māori - Full Year

Course Description

This course follows on from Year 9 Te Reo Māori and Year 9 Māori Performing Arts 

Ākonga will:

  • revise language to enable them to discuss whānau relationships

  • communicate information about themselves and others

  •  present information accurately about a well-known Māori person past and present

  • write descriptions of people they know

  • extend their oral pepeha/mihimihi


In this course, ākonga can expect to take part in activities that involve:

  • Listening, speaking and responding to commands and instructions in Te Reo Māori.

  • Writing sentences in Māori

  • Reading and understanding text in Māori and English

  • Presenting spoken and written assignments/research

  • There is an option to participate in Manu Kōrero speech contest


Ākonga will also study three important Maori art forms: waiata (songs), haka (traditional dance), and poi (performance art using weighted balls on cords). Ākonga will learn about the cultural significance of these art forms and develop their skills in performing them. Emphasis is placed on understanding the historical context, correct technique, and cultural sensitivity associated with waiata, haka, and poi. Through practical activities, rehearsals, and collaborative projects, ākonga will develop their teamwork, communication, and performance skills. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in these art forms and an appreciation for Māori culture and performing arts.
